You already know how the work gets done.

Buying the shop you work in can start with a conversation, not a listing. Keep the process independent, documented, and grounded in information you are authorized to use.

A practical first pass

  1. Write down what you understand about the day-to-day work, and what you still need to learn about ownership.
  2. Decide what role, hours, and responsibilities you can realistically take on.
  3. Ask whether the owner is open to a private conversation. Do not use confidential employer records for personal planning.
  4. Speak with an SBA lender and independent legal and tax advisers early.
  5. Review licensing, customer concentration, equipment, working capital, and transition responsibilities with qualified professionals.
